New KHS chamber choir to perform today at downtown courthouse

Thursday, October 30, 2014

The Dunklin County Courthouse in Kennett will get a special treat this morning, as a new local choral group performs in the downtown courthouse rotunda at 10:45 a.m. Voca Bella (Italian for 'voice beautiful') is a new, select chamber choir at Kennett High School (KHS), founded this year by choir director Viretta Sexton. It is a 12-member a capella choir that performs an eclectic, contemporary repertoire. Sexton said participants (freshmen through seniors) are required to already belong to another KHS choir, in order to be considered for Voca Bella. She also explained that the group serves as a community liaison for KHS, performing at a variety of local events, and for a wide range of clubs, businesses and organizations. If the choir's booking schedule is any indication, the singers have been busy. They have already performed the National Anthem at KHS volleyball games and a tennis match, and have sung for the Rotary Club of Kennett, the Wednesday Music Club and Heritage Nursing Center. Sexton said Voca Bella would be more than happy to schedule more public performances, if invited. Tomorrow's performance will feature four songs, including a tune called "Music in My Mother's House," penned during, and about, the Bosnian Conflict. For more information about Voca Bella, or to schedule a performance, contact KHS at 573-717-1120.
