his time of year, people begin making the lists for those they plan on sending Christmas cards. The practice stems all the way back to the mid 1800s. The tradition of exchanging cards began in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole who was a government worker in the United Kingdom. Cole and his artist friend John Horsley invented the idea and according to an online source, www.whychristmas.com, the pair designed the first card and then sold them for 1 shilling a piece which, in todays currency, amounts to about $.08. The card had three panels, the outer ones depicting scenes of people taking care of the poor and the center panel showed a family celebrating Christmas by having a large dinner. It was said that some did not like the card due to the fact that the main picture featured the image of a child being offered a glass of wine.
